Cystic Fibrosis Center - What to Expect

What to Expect During Visits

The center uses the CF Foundation’s clinical care guidelines, which reflect the latest  evidence-based care, during annual clinic visits, routine clinic visits, and as-needed visits. All patients over the age of 3 years will be asked to wear a mask in the waiting room and in the halls to protect themselves and others from the spread of bacteria.

Annual Visits

The team will perform an in-depth review of every aspect of the child’s CF care. The visit will take at least half a day and include:

  • Blood testing
  • Pulmonary function testing (PFTs)
  • Chest X-ray
  • Sputum or throat culture
  • Glucose tolerance test
  • Airway clearance review
  • Nutritional evaluation
  • Social work assessment

Routine Visits

Routine clinic visits are scheduled every month for infants 0-6 months of age, every 2 months for infants 6-12 months of age, and every 3 months for patients over the age of 1 year. These visits usually last from one-two hours and include:

  • Height and weight measurements
  • Pulmonary function testing (PFTs)
  • Meeting with a CF physician, nurse practitioner and other caregivers as needed

As-needed Visits

If the patient is sick, has a cold that is lasting longer than normal, or develops an increased cough or other difficulties, call the CF center nurse at 706-721-2635. She may recommend treatment over the phone or schedule a visit at the CF center to address the symptoms. As-needed visits may be scheduled more frequently if the patient is having  concerns such as poor weight gain or if he or she has been recently diagnosed with CF.
