The Fifth Floor

The design of the fifth floor closely resembles the fourth floor with 44 beds and three nursing pods with 14 to 16 beds each. This floor houses surgery patients and oncology patients.

At the front of the fifth floor is a large family lounge and kitchenette. The lounge overlooks the family rooftop garden on the fourth floor. This floor also has a laundry facility for all Children’s Hospital of Georgia families to use. Nearby is a satellite rehabilitation unit so patients don't have far to travel for physical, occupational or speech therapy. The fifth floor has two activity rooms which are developmentally based. Each nursing unit also has a solarium and family consult area.

The two nursing units nearest the front of the hospital are staffed for patient care; the first for surgery patients and the second for oncology patients. These patient populations are grouped on the same floor because of the extreme importance of infection control in both. This space is used primarily by inpatients, but some outpatients will receive infusion therapy or other long treatments so they can lie in bed, relax and watch television or videos.

Twelve patient rooms in the third pod will be utilized for temporary surgery office space.

The Children’s Hospital of Georgia 36-bed neonatal intensive care unit and the pediatric cardiac catheterization laboratory are at the fifth floor juncture of the new hospital and the Medical Office Building. The walls between the two were opened and to provide support space for the cardiac catheterization laboratory, including an anteroom for patients and families.
