Neurogenic claudication
This is a syndrome associated with hypertrophic changes to the Facet joints and ligamentum flavum (Yellow ligament) in the lumbar spine. Claudication means "a limp or a lameness". Patients commonly describe pain radiating down one or both legs associated with walking a given distance. Patients frequently pause until resuming their trip. This results in a stop/start gait pattern. The distance a patient can walk gets shorter as the Lumbar stenosis worsens. Since the lumbar stenosis is slightly eased while bending forwards, these patients tend to walk bent over and may use a cane or a walker. Incidentally, many patients report significant improvement in their ability to walk while pushing a shopping cart!
