Prolactin and TSH Testing for Fertility
Thyroid stimulating hormone (or TSH) tests and prolactin tests are among the first fertility tests we perform at Georgia Regents Reproductive Medicine and Infertility Associates in Augusta, Georgia.
A woman needs normal TSH levels and prolactin levels in order to maximize her chances of getting pregnant and carrying a pregnancy.
Further, these TSH and prolactin levels should be normal before any further hormonal evaluation and treatment.
What is TSH?
The TSH test measures the levels of TSH, a hormone that is made and released by the pituitary gland.
The pituitary can sense whether there is enough thyroid hormone in the bloodstream, and it releases TSH when it detects insufficient thyroid hormone.
What is Prolactin?
Also produced by the pituitary gland, prolactin release is prompted by delivery of the placenta. Prolactin is the main hormone involved in the formation and production of milk.
