Investing in Our Community
Georgia Regents Health System plays a critical role in boosting Augusta’s financial health. A Georgia Hospital Association study released in May 2012 reported that Georgia Regents Medical Center pumped $1.04 billion into the local economy in fiscal year 2010, up $26 million from 2009 for the not-for-profit health system. Additionally, Georgia Regents University's academic and research initiatives generated more than $832 million locally, according to a 2010 University System of Georgia report, for a combined impact of $1.9 billion.
Lending Support
Georgia Regents Medical Center employees volunteer their time in our community and contribute to its health, education and well being by supporting various community organizations, including the United Way of the CSRA, the American Cancer Society, Golden Harvest Food Bank, Ronald McDonald House and American Heart Association.
Healing Arts
Georgia Regents Health System has long recognized that art plays an important role in healing. There are pianos in two of the hospital entrances, and local musicians, including harpists and guitarists, play regularly for patients as additional therapeutic "medicine." Georgia Regents Health System commissioned regional artists to create art for the Cancer Center, which opened in 2009. The result is more than 100 pieces in a combination of genres throughout the two-story facility, including the Ribbons of Hope sculpture, which cascades above the stairwell, serving as a focal point in the building's atrium. Local and regional art is now being used throughout the adult hospital, including pieces by Lucy Weigle outside the Heart Rhythm Center on the eighth floor. In the Children' Hospital of Georgia, student-created murals are displayed in side the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit so that the view from each child's bed reveals bright, colorful, kid-friendly art pieces.
In keeping with our philosophy on the healing power of arts, Georgia Regents Health System is the presenting sponsor of Augusta's annual Westobou Festival, an acclaimed arts event that draws visitors from across the Southeast. The Westobou Festival encompasses 10 days of cultural events featuring local, regional and nationally-recognized artists primarily in the disciplines of dance, music, theater and visual arts.
Medical Education
As the patient care provider on the Georgia Regents University campus, the hospitals and clinics of Georgia Regents Medical Center provide the opportunity for hundreds of nurses, residents and clinical students to hone their patient care skills. We also help fund the education of numerous Georgia Regents University students through a margin allocation. To date, Georgia Regents Medical Center, has transferred nearly $94.3 million to Georgia Regents University to support its education and research mission.
