Get an Accurate Diagnosis for Uterine Problem with Hysteroscopy
Heavy menstrual bleeding, bleeding between periods and painful cramping can undermine your lifestyle and well being. If you suffer from these problems, the first step to better health is an accurate diagnosis.
Gynecologists at Georgia Regents Medical Center offer a simple in-office diagnostic procedure known as hysteroscopy that allows them to view the uterine cavity, identify polyps, fibroids or other growths and sometimes remove them through operative hysteroscopy using a resectoscope.
Diagnostic hysteroscopy can generally be performed in a physicians’ office. The physician numbs the cervix, then inserts a hysteroscope, or a small instrument with a tiny video camera attached to it, through the cervix and into the uterus. The scope is so small that it fits through the uterus with minimal or no dilation. The uterus is filled with saline or carbon dioxide, which may cause mild cramping. The physician examines the uterus, looking for growths or other problems. This takes only a minute or two. A small plastic tube may be used to take a sample of the lining of the uterus.
