• Convenient parking is provided on Harper Street for women in labor.
• The north elevators are the only elevators that provide access to the labor and delivery unit. They are located just inside the Harper Street entrance to the hospital across from the VA main entrance and crosswalk. Labor and Delivery and Postpartum are located on the 7th Floor.
• This is the area where you will check in to labor and delivery when you are in labor or for any scheduled appointments. The staff will assist you in registering with the hospital, filling out paperwork, and getting you settled into a room.
• Most mothers will labor, give birth and recover in the same room. All rooms are private with their own bathroom and shower or tub. The rooms are specially designed with all necessary medical equipment in a comfortable setting including a pull out bed for a support person. We welcome two of your family members or friends as guests while you are in Labor & Delivery.
• Most women in labor have IV access for fluid or in the event that emergency medications are needed. You may also see an IV pump used to give medications during an induction or other procedure.
• The electronic fetal monitor is used during labor to monitor the baby's reaction to contractions and also to ensure safety during labor inductions or medication use. We also offer telemetry monitors that allow moms freedom to walk, use a labor tub and move around in labor.
• Our labor and delivery suites are equipped with showers and tubs for your comfort and pain relief during labor.
• Our antepartum rooms are for patients who have health conditions requiring close observation before delivery. These rooms have televisions, phone, wireless internet access and space for visitors. They are designed for longer stays that may be needed.
• Our surgical suites are located on the Labor and Delivery Unit and are available 24 hours a day for scheduled or urgent surgeries. Mother and baby recover together in our Post Anesthesia Care unit before transferring to the Postpartum Unit together
• A baby warmer may be used to keep a baby warm during exams and procedures. We encourage regular skin-to-skin contact between mother or partner and baby to keep baby's temperature stable.
• This is the clerk's desk in the postpartum unit. The clerks will assist with filling out paperwork, getting your discharge information ready, answering call lights and providing any information you may need.
• This is the room where we will care for you until you are ready to go home. We encourage you to have your baby stay with you in your room so that you can bond with and learn to care for your baby. We provide television, local phone service and wireless internet. Each room has a private bathroom and shower.
• We offer a patient kitchen area stocked with snacks, beverages, a refrigerator and a microwave for your convenience.
• Breast pumps are available for moms who need or desire to pump their breasts. Breastfeeding is strongly supported and there is a lactation consultant on staff to assist breastfeeding patients.
• Our respite nursery is used for any procedures that can't be done in mother's room or for babies who require short periods of observation. We encourage our patients to keep babies in their room with them, but care is available in the respite nursery if mom needs to rest.
