Medical Weight Loss Program Prior to Surgery

Are you a high risk patient for weight loss surgery? Medical weight loss is particularly important for extremely obese patients, as it lowers their risk of complications. Georgia Regents Weight Loss Center offers a medical weight loss program for candidates who have been identified as a high risk patient for weight loss surgery.

Morbidly obese patients may not qualify for weight loss surgery during their initial evaluation in our program. Two primary reasons include:

  • Extremely high BMI makes some patients a very high risk for complications during and after surgery
  • Patients have not participated in a physician supervised medical weight loss program that is required by their insurance plan

Whatever the reason, our medical weight loss program is committed to your success and can help you overcome these challenges prior to your weight loss surgery.

A team of dedicated physicians, nurses and dietician work together to deliver compassionate and coordinated care to help you with weight loss, using a combination of dieting, education and exercise. Following appropriate weight loss, patients will be re-evaluated for weight loss surgery because long-term weight loss is less successful without surgery.

Don't let a heavy, enlarged liver delay your weight loss operation!

Many morbidly obese patients have enlarged livers, increasing the difficulty and risks of surgery. An enlarged liver also decreases the likelihood of eligibility for the less invasive laparoscopic operations and increases the need for open surgery, which is associated with more complications.

Bariatric surgeons may abort weight loss operations for the patient’s safety if the liver is too large. Our two-to four-week pre-operative diet can shrink the liver and reduce the risk of complications during and after surgery. We offer a comprehensive medical weight loss program to assist with high risk patients for weight loss surgery.
