Am I A Candidate for Weight Loss Surgery?

Although weight loss surgery can put many people on the path to better health, it is not right for everyone. To be eligible for bariatric surgery at Georgia Regents Center for Obesity & Metabolism, you must have a long history of obesity and meet requirements that minimize your risk of complications. Bariatric surgery candidates must be adults who fully understand the need to commit to lifestyle changes and have unsuccessfully tried alternate methods for weight loss. Other criteria include:

  • Excess weight reflecting National Institute of Health Guidelines for Weight Loss Surgery as indicated by the following:

- Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or more or

- BMI of 35-40 with an obesity-related condition such a sleep apnea, hypertension, diabetes, heart disease or liver disease
