Advantages of Gamma Knife treatment for Brain Tumors, Meningiomas and Trigeminal Neuralgia
Gamma Knife can be used in conjunction with traditional surgery and treatments. Gamma Knife enables us to treat many neurological disorders with proven, effective results. Gamma Knife treatments are safe, accurate and reliable. Gamma Knife surgery offers several advantages over traditional ways to treat difficult brain tumors and other disorders including:
- Safe, minimally invasive procedure with no incision or opening of the skull
- Very little discomfort
- No general anesthesia, except for children
- Typically done on an outpatient basis
- No risk of infection, hemorrhage, spinal fluid leakage or adverse reactions to general anesthesia
- Greater accuracy and reliability
- Less expensive than conventional neurosurgery
- Eliminates lengthy post-surgical hospital stays and disabilities and minimizes rehabilitation costs
Georgia Regents Medical Center Gamma Knife Center features the Perfexion model Gamma Knife unit with Extend technology. The Perfexion represents the most advanced technology available for delivering Gamma Knife radiosurgery treatment. This greatly enhanced capability allows access to targets previously unreachable by traditional Gamma Knife units while offering shorter treatment times and enhanced patient comfort.
Extend technology allows our team to provide the most advanced treatment option, fractionated radiosurgery (multiple treatments, two to five radiosurgery sessions). Therefore, tumors or blood vessel abnormalities that were previously too large to treat with traditional Gamma Knife can now be safely treated in several sessions. With Extend, treatment is available for lesions in the skull base, paranasal sinuses, orbits, larynx, upper cervical spine and paraspinal tissues.
