Headaches
The Georgia Regents Neuroscience Center provides expert acute and chronic care to a wide variety of neurological disorders and symptoms related to headaches.
Because headaches and migraines can come from a variety of factors, diagnosis and evaluation are important for discovering the initial cause and providing appropriate treatment. There are five different types of headaches:
- tension-type
- migraine
- cluster
- organic
- rebound
Normally, headaches can be caused by a number of things and are not an immediate concern. However, frequent and/or debilitating headaches should be addressed by a medical professional. Most recurring, debilitating headaches are migraines, but in some cases they can be a symptom of an underlying condition.
You should see a doctor if:
- Your headaches interfere with your ability to carry out daily routine in your work or social life
- Your disabling headaches occur more than three times a month.
- You are over 50 when you start having regular headaches, as they could be caused by inflammation in the arteries leading to the brain.
Migraines
The Neuroscience Center at Georgia Regents Medical Center specializes in the diagnosis and management of migraines. Management typically includes a combination of medical intervention and prevention techniques.
To help treat migraines, doctors can prescribe a class of medications known as “triptans,” which are the only medications available that specifically target migraines. But the best way to help prevent headaches and migraines is to know avoid triggers them.
Triggers can include:
- Food
- Stress
- Light
- Weather changes
- Dieting/hunger
- Loud noises/sounds
- Changes in sleeping habits
- Caffeine
- Hormonal fluctuations
Doctors suggest keeping a journal to track when and under what conditions migraines occur in order to help you and your physician discover potential triggers for your condition.
The Georgia Regents Neuroscience Center offers a variety of resources to help your diagnose and treat the cause of headaches and migraines, including neurologists, neurosurgeons and other specialists.
