Georgia Regents Medical Center Skull Base Patient Information
Over recent years, the field of skull base surgery has been revolutionized by multidisciplinary improvements in anesthetic and surgical techniques that allow less invasive, safer methods, including endonasal surgery (operations performed through the nose, assisted by a lit camera). With contributions from various Neurosurgery specialties, minimally invasive endoscopic skull base surgery was developed.
Endoscopic surgery offers several advantages over traditional open surgery in properly selected patients. Because this method of surgery goes through the nose and doesn’t have an impact on the face or skull, there is a faster recovery time and less cosmetic damage.
There are several types of tumors that affect the skull base, and some of these may be amenable to endoscopic removal. The most common tumors addressed through an endoscopic approach are pituitary tumors. However, other more complex tumors can also be operated with these techniques. Some of these tumors include:
- Pituitary adenomas
- Meningiomas
- Paranasal sinus tumors
- Esthesioneuroblastoma
- Chordomas
- Orbital tumors
- Metastatic
In addition to endoscopic procedures, our center offers the full range of traditional skull base surgery treatments including open skull base surgery techniques. Our goal is to provide each patient with the specific treatment that will bring about the best possible outcome.
